Belegarth Medieval Combat Society is a sport where participants fight with foam
padded safety equipment made to reflect medieval weaponry. The sport's combat
is hard hitting and fast-paced, governed by a set of easy-to-learn rules, and
requires a level of skill and aggression that challenges its participants to be physically fit.
Gameplay is overseen by marshals, or referees. In the most basic sense, hits are scored
by landing a blow with sufficient force to any of the four target-zones: torso, legs, arms or
head. For safety reasons, the head is an illegal target for melee weapons, but is a legal
target for missile weapons like arrows and javelins. A player is considered 'dead' after a
torso or head hit, or any combination of two extremities. 'Dead' players are out of play for
the remainder of the battle, which usually lasts five to ten minutes, and must act as such.
Once the battle is over, each team regroups for the next fight.
The sword holds a powerful fascination for many people, but with the coming of firearms
they have generally disappeared from combat use. Today competitive swordplay is often
limited to martial sports.
BMCS is a martial sport that uses stiff, foam padded approximations of medieval weapons
and a very simple set of rules for an experience that is fast, challenging and addictive.
So whether you are just looking for a great workout or a way to unwind and enjoy an intense,
competitive and friendly sport, come out and swing a sword with us.

"Here's the first installment of your Fitter Faster Further news.
Times and locations
Cumberland McDonald's, Mondays at 10 am - 11 am
Arthur McDonald's, Wednesdays at 10 am - 11 am
We keep walking until July 7th. Free.
Ten minute, twenty minute and thirty minute walks. All ten minute walks feature longer warm ups, stretches and cool downs. Look for celebrity walk work out leaders coming soon!
Your walk leaders and hosts are volunteers who love to walk and live an active lifestyle. Hats off to them & to you for coming out and making time to walk during the week.
Calling for Rain on Wednesday Morning
For the group gathering on Wednesdays at McDonald's on Arthur Street, the weatherman is calling for rain so play it by ear. If it's thundering and lightening, we won't be walking, but if it's sprinkling, we'll pretend we're walking in Vancouver and that rain is good for our skin!
Anyway, the garden is just starting to look good so I hope we'll get a little more rain. All Fitter Faster Further walks will go rain or shine.
Walk with Doc – Tuesday June 15th at 6:45 pm
Fitter Faster Further will host the Walk with Doc at Boulevard Lake on June 15th. Please join me! Meet at Birch Point Park at 6:45 pm. Our guest doctor is a new doctor to town. Let’s make him welcome!
Also, Walk with Doc takes place Monday to Friday at Birch Point Park during the month of June. It’s free and a pleasant way to spend an evening. Coordinated by Northern Hearts.
Here are the details from the Walk with Doc 2010 organizers:
“It is our goal to have everyone begin at the same time and return in time for cool down relatively together. Therefore, the Host Organization will lead the group and the Doctor will stay with the slower walkers. When the Doctor’s group is met by the returning Host group, they will turn around and return to the staging area for the cool down.”
Time Trials – Lakehead University Hangar - DATES TBA
Please let me know when you are available and I will book another date at the Lakehead University Hangar track. I have tentatively booked the track and our trainer on Thursday June 10 at 6:30 pm. Let me know if that date works for you. It's free and fun too! 684-2403, 627-3564 or nangus@thunderbay.ca.
Get your base line walk time. This is not a race, just a gentle stroll to give you a chance to record your time to complete a mile (8 laps) or half a mile (4 laps). Meet at the Lakehead University Hangar track. Park in the LU Fieldhouse parking lot (enter directly across from the Oliver Road entrance to the hospital.) and follow directions into the hangar. David Witiluk, our master trainer, will help you to understand your VO2 max.
Chatelaine Online Walking Club
Check out www.chatelaine.com and search for walking club. I’ve started contributing to the walking club forum and will post regular updates from Fitter Faster Further online. Join up and track your distance online.
Walking Tip # 1 – Perfect Posture
Maintain a neutral posture. Keep your head level with your ears about your shoulders. Slide shoulders down and relax with arms hanging at your sides and palms facing in. Lift your breastbone up, align your shoulders above your hips. Draw core muscles in. Lengthen behind your knees, line your knees up above your ankles. Keep the centre of each foot parallel, with your legs in line with hip joints. Distribute your weight evenly on the soles of your feet, balancing weight across the ball of each foot and in the centre of each heel.
And, if this is too much to remember while you are walking, think of Carol's tip that she learned in Australia, "squeeze your butt!" It seems to work miracles with posture!
Walking Tip # 2 - If the Shoe Fits, wear it
When was the last time you had your foot measured before you bought a shoe? Some of the retailers in Thunder Bay have a policy of letting you take the shoe home and wear it. If you're not happy with it, return it and try another. This opportunity to take a shoe out of the store to wear in your home (not out in the garden!) sure makes a difference if you're making an investment in walking shoes. Call your friendly athletic shoe retailer to ask them if they offer this service. Your shoes and socks are the most important investments you can make in a walking program.
Prizes
Over the next few weeks we'll have a few participation prizes. Everything you've ever needed for walking including a working pedometer! Keep dropping in to McDonald's on Mondays or Wednesdays. Walk a bit, talk a bit, win a bit.
Walking is Front Page News!
Congratulations to one of our Fitter Faster Further walkers, Dianne for her participation in the prediction walking event in the Northwest Senior Games. Check out the June 8 edition of The Chronicle-Journal with Dianne's photo on the front page.
Remember, ten is terrific! Find at least a couple of times a day to work in a TEN minute walk. You'll benefit TENfold!
How do I find Nancy?
I work on Mondays and Fridays at the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre on River Street and on Tuesdays to Thursdays, I can be found at the Herb Carroll 55 Plus Centre on Lincoln Street.

It's not working for you
If this pilot project isn't meeting your walking goals, please let me know. It's a work in progress so your comments and ideas are helpful. Give me a shout. If you want to hang in for a few weeks and meet some new people, we'd love to have you. If it's not for you, keep walking on your own and with friends in your neighbourhood. We'll be thrilled if you're moving! Stay in touch.
Until next time, step out!
