The importance of warm-up:                                         

  • increases core or tissue temperature increase oxygen
  • dynamically warms up all major muscle groups at the joint
  • rehearsal of what the workout phase of the activity or skill required
  • functional preparation

Current research focuses on athletic performance as opposed to group fitness classes. 

There is some controversy in areas such as:

  • static stretching versus dymanic range of motion (ROM)
  • Specific movements or exercises versus general movements
  • Physical training versus total-body or holistic exercise (i.e. mind/body/spirit approach)
